to the maxi

My mother has always had great taste and an eye for style (which has often resulted in a certain daughter dipping into her wardrobe - sometimes uninvited). These days, with her closet far out of reach, I regularly find myself looking at old photos and coveting her fantastic outfits of the past. Tunics, oversized sweaters, polka dots, boater tops, velvet - I only wish she had kept everything she's ever worn. I especially love this striped maxi skirt/pink blazer ensemble - perfection.

rapunzel, rapunzel

Locked in a palace far far away, Hanne Gaby Odiele plays a modern day Rapunzel in the February cover shoot of Numéro Korea. Photographed by Lina Scheynius and styled by Jeon Hyo-Jin, Hanne spends her days reading and slumbering, waiting for her Prince Charming to return.

Hudson's Bay classic point blanket reworked by Smythe. I want I want.

takashi homma

Takashi Homma’s own “I love my daughter very much. I love Tokyo very much.” declaration is probably the key to reveal the connection between the graceful and intimate sequence of images depicting Homma’s daughter and the city of Tokyo. With his incredible touch and distance he again creates a special world of his own, documenting his daughter from being a toddler to a young little girl through the everyday places in and around their life.
(about Homma's 'Tokyo and My Daughter')

Homma is renowned for his subdued Tokyo landscapes, but his portraits of Japanese youth are possibly even more affecting. The way he captures contemporary childhood is stunningly candid, instilling in the viewer a strong nostalgia for endless wonder– underlined by a sense of deep disquiet.

(We Love You So)

I spotted this beautiful book over at We Love You So and now wish it was part of my library, as it combines both my love of adorable children and the sprawling, inspiring cityscape I can't wait to explore come spring.

once wed

I spent a couple of weekends this month working at wedding shows. The vendors at these horrible conventions walk the line between cheesy and super tacky. Needless to say the greasy DJs from Woodbridge and hideous bridal shoes (bedazzled wedge sandles?) induced plenty of mouth vomit.

While the work was grueling (stuffing gift bags, handing out magazines) and the brides were 'zilla-esq, the whole experience didn't turn me off weddings entirely. What can I say, I guess I'm a romantic. This blog reminds me just how beautiful and unique weddings can/should be. The photos of real weddings are charming and simple and the DIY wedding projects are so adorable.

black widow

photos from here and here

This post over at Refinery 29 reminded me of the little collection of lace photographs I had, tucked away on my desktop, waiting to be shared - although, I think the mood in these shots is slightly more black widow than Web of Love.

xxx

You, you still have all the answers
and you, you still have them too
and we, we live half in the day time
and we, we live half at night

Watch things on VCRs, with me and talk about big love
I think we're superstars, you say you think we are the best thing

But you, you just know, you just do
-The xx, VCR

I just can't get enough.

when Tommy met Tavi

Mr Jak and Jil shot little miss fashion blogger of the moment for Paris Vogue this month.

Would anyone who parlez francais like to translate this for me?

you're the one that i want

Jessica's post below reminded me of how much I miss having a proper kitchen (one which doesn't have a washing machine in lieu of an oven) to whip up my most favourite breakfast (or lunch, or dinner), huevos rancheros. These pictures were taken last year, whilst I was blissfully cooking up a storm in the good old Locke Street kitchen. Sigh - I miss avocados, tortillas, and four-burner stoves.

deserted

bitchin' kitchen

After spending a summer living in the basement and eating only take out meals my mother finally finished designing her dream kitchen. Knocking out everything from the pink cupboards to the awkwardly placed bathroom - the new kitchen is a shiny modern masterpiece (if I do say so myself). A few months on (and one disheveled Christmas later) the space still sparkles. So much so that the kitchen remodeling folk came by this morning to photograph our family's eatery - in all its chrome glory - to show off on websites, in catalogs etc. After they left I thought I'd take some time to play The Selby and take a few snaps of some of my favourite kitchen things to share with you all.
