Mother's Day

I know everyone says that their mom is their best friend, but do you know what - I think if they met my mom SHE would be their best friend. Since I was two weeks old my mom has been my traveling companion; 24 years on and our family adventures haven't stopped. We share a love of flat whites, antler chandeliers, cowboy boots, white wine, and seeing the world. I'll spend my life trying to be as cool as her.

Sometimes we don't get to spend holidays together, so it's pretty extra special when we do.

Happy Mother's Day Mom... thank you for letting me ride kangaroos before I was even old enough to know I wanted to.

a love story.

This is a post about a romantic comedy I'm desperate to see. But first of all, it's a post about a football game. Last night I watched the Superbowl, as I do every year, without any knowledge of any sort about who was playing or what exactly a "down" is. I find it to be an excellent excuse to eat copious amounts of multigrain tostitos and layer dip. I also enjoy making silly bets with anyone who will agree to it. In previous years I have managed to bet on the losing team every single time. I have bought pitchers of beer that I was not allowed to share and winterlicious dinners that I couldn't afford. It's a pathetic track record. Anyways, this year my boyfriend bet on the favourite, I bet on the underdogs (due in large part to the gold fleur de lis on their helmets) and miraculously - I won. The terms of the bet? Next weekend my lovely boyfriend (who often proclaims he is allergic to movie theatres) has to take me to this star studded cinematic love fest, and pay for popcorn. Don't you love football?

to the maxi

My mother has always had great taste and an eye for style (which has often resulted in a certain daughter dipping into her wardrobe - sometimes uninvited). These days, with her closet far out of reach, I regularly find myself looking at old photos and coveting her fantastic outfits of the past. Tunics, oversized sweaters, polka dots, boater tops, velvet - I only wish she had kept everything she's ever worn. I especially love this striped maxi skirt/pink blazer ensemble - perfection.

once wed

I spent a couple of weekends this month working at wedding shows. The vendors at these horrible conventions walk the line between cheesy and super tacky. Needless to say the greasy DJs from Woodbridge and hideous bridal shoes (bedazzled wedge sandles?) induced plenty of mouth vomit.

While the work was grueling (stuffing gift bags, handing out magazines) and the brides were 'zilla-esq, the whole experience didn't turn me off weddings entirely. What can I say, I guess I'm a romantic. This blog reminds me just how beautiful and unique weddings can/should be. The photos of real weddings are charming and simple and the DIY wedding projects are so adorable.

xxx

You, you still have all the answers
and you, you still have them too
and we, we live half in the day time
and we, we live half at night

Watch things on VCRs, with me and talk about big love
I think we're superstars, you say you think we are the best thing

But you, you just know, you just do
-The xx, VCR

I just can't get enough.

drawing a connection

You were reading Catch-22 on the subway this morning. I have never seen such a beautiful profile. I wanted to say hi, but then you’d turn towards me and I wouldn’t be able to look at your profile anymore. You were so into your book, I don’t think you noticed me falling in love with you. But I thought I’d ask, just in case.

We shared a bear suit at an apartment party on Saturday night.
I asked for your number and you gave it to me, but somehow I don't have an area code written down. I had a great time talking with you, and I don't trust Chance enough to wait until I see you in the elevators...

My friend Erin sent me a link to a lovely blog today - its full of whimsical drawings by Brooklyn artist Sophie Blackwell, which illustrate some of Craigslist's finer Missed Connections. I really like how Sophie describes her work: Messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand; the modern equivalents are the funny, sad, beautiful, hopeful, hopeless, poetic posts on Missed Connections websites. Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I'm trying to pin a few of them down." Oh, how I just love this.

a nice day for a white wedding

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a Korean wedding in Seoul. It was so lovely, although not at all what I would want for my own wedding, as it was quite a production. Pre-ceremony, the bride sat primly on a chaise lounge and guests had the opportunity to snap pictures. The ceremony itself was broadcasted on big screens in case you got stuck with bad seats, so it was a bit like watching reality tv/concert (and even though I didn't understand a word of what was going on, I cried throughout the whole thing anyways). Afterwards, a huge lunch buffet (complete with bottomless soju) was shared amongst the various other weddings taking place that day. It was all very... efficient. If I were to ever get married, I would want to do what my parents and josephine de la blume/mark ronson did: have a low key, intimate ceremony outside with close friends. I'm in no hurry to tie the knot, but I do love the idea of marriage, and quirky, outdoor weddings (and of course, I would want this song playing as I walked down the aisle).
