these boots were made for walking

I've got a case of the gimmes for these ChloƩ shiny leather boots.

natalie portman

Um, how great is Natalie Portman? I finally saw New York, I Love You last night, which, I'm sorry to say, didn't quite measure up to its predecessor, Paris Je T'aime. However, there were some exceptional moments, and Ms. Portman provided two of them, both in the vignette she starred in, Mira Nair, and the short she wrote and directed. I love Natalie Portman for obvious reasons: Garden State, Closer, Where the Heart Is, the whole Harvard thing, how she can rock a shaved head (I even loved V for Vendetta), The Darjeeling Limited and Hotel Chevalier, Paris Je T'aime.... the list goes on (except for The Other Boleyn Girl....yuck). I especially love her interview from September's Interview where she talks with Jake Gyllenhaal about ice cream, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch dolls, and, best of all, her affection for dirty rap:

GYLLENHAAL: What song best describes your current state?

PORTMAN: My current state . . . I’m trying to think of a song that feels like sleepwalking. [laughs] I don’t know. I’ve mostly been listening to dirty rap lately. That’s sort of my scene.

GYLLENHAAL: Your affection for dirty rap is something that people really don’t know about you, which I think is fascinating. You do incredible things for the world, and then you listen to just completely obscene hip-hop music.

PORTMAN: Really, really obscene hip-hop. I love it so much. It makes me laugh and then it makes me want to dance. Those are like my two favorite things, so combined . . . I’ve been listening a lot lately to “Wait (The Whisper Song)” by the Ying Yang Twins, where the lyrics are like, “Wait ’til you see my dick”—which is just amazing because it’s whispered. [whispers] “Wait ’til you see my dick . . . ” [laughs] Crazy. So I just listen to it like I’m a five-year-old, like, “Oh my god! I can’t believe he just said that!”

You can read the rest of the interview here. You can also watch her spout some dirty rap of her own here (I just watched it again and was giggling - she's so cute!).

TO Fashion Week: Joe Fresh

Joe Mimran just might be the best thing to happen to grocery stores since, well sliced bread...okay make that bulk candy. His eponymous Joe Fresh line consistently turns out cheap and cheerful (although ill fitting at times - but we'll forgive you) designs that are astoundingly on-trend, especially for a label sold alongside cereal and toothpaste. His runway show was probably the hottest ticket of the week because, well lets face it, these are desirable pieces that us normal folk can actually afford. So if you love head to toe beige on beige and country clogs (if Joe Fresh AND Chanel say so - I guess I'll have to give in) then get excited for Spring 2010. For a much more competent review of the show and photos of the entire collection peep Toronto Life's style blog.

spoiler alert: there are a lot of body suits happening and i'm kind of into it

decade in style

I love, love, love this spread from Autumn's issue of AnOther: to celebrate this decade in fashion, the magazine has paired the most influential designers with some equally influential ladies (actresses, models, singers, muses) "who inspire us with their sense of style and and the power of their image" (AnOther). The fashion houses granted the magazine access to their beautiful archives, and each icon was carefully (and perfectly!) paired with looks by one designer from the past ten years. Here are some of my favourite pairings:

Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte (Spring/Summer 2009)

Chloe Sevigny in Miu Miu (Spring/Summer 2008, Autumn/Winter 2006)

Natalie Portman in Lanvin (Spring/Summer 2008)

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton (Spring/Summer 2007)

Winona Ryder in Marc Jacobs (Autumn/Winter 2009)

Kate Moss in John Galliano (Spring/Summer 2003)

TO Fashion Week: Jason Meyers

"An elegant take on what the reluctantly growing-up girly-girl wants to wear now"
SNP for Eye Weekly

Looks like Toronto fashion's not so weak at Fashion Week. Now considering i'm such a reality show junkie its pretty shocking to note that I actually have never seen an episode of Project Runway. With that in mind, I had no idea who Jason Meyers was or why I should care - well, until now. Living vicariously through much more VIP style bloggers I took a peak at Meyers' Spring 2010 collection and I think we can all agree...swoon. Bubblegum pink and dove gray ruffles paired with black leather gloves and lace up heels made for an impressive debut post reality tv land. And thank goodness, the strong shoulder is here to stay.

Sidenote: these photos are phenom and are graciously stolen from Miss Jenna Marie Wakani (via Toronto Life) who is not only a fabulous toronto based shutterbug but also one of my only office friends and a fellow OTHS classmate, alongside Mr. Jak and Jil of course ....no big deal.

creative coupling: hannah and landon

While checking my fave style blog of the moment, Turned Out, I came across a post about this adorable couple - Hannah and Landon Metz. I quickly jumped over to their blog and loved it (and as such, want to recommend it to you). Their glorious Williamsburg apartment boasts an extensive hat collection, as well as tons of cute vintage bags, shoes, and picture frames. Landon has that whole 'i'm-dirty-in-the-best-way-possible' look that my boyfriend covets and Hannah is as cute as a button (and has some pretty fantastic party dresses). Another reason why I am admiring this inspiring couple? They are the creators of the international community art project, The Company of People (you can visit the Company Diary here). Oh, I just love love.

This week in unimpressed

While not working at work (as you do) I stumbled upon www.tightsarenotpants.com. Now, I don't know who is responsible for this blasphemous website, but I'm sure it's a man. Katie and I are probably the biggest supports of tights as the only sensible form of legwear - both stylish and comfortable there's nothing not to love. Any self respecting girl has at least two pairs and wouldn't go anywhere without them. While I'm a little too timid to get on the whole multicoloured, fringed, cut out legging look I can say with certainty that tights, in their many incarnations, are here to stay. So whoever started this anonymous little website will have a lot of lycra clad style lovers to contend with on their campaign to abolish this beloved wardrobe staple. Jeez, go pick on people still wearing denim on denim .. oh wait - is that cool again thanks to Chloe?
